Winter Storm Batters MI, More Snow Expected In The Detroit Area

Some parts of Michigan saw nearly three feet of snow, according the National Weather Service.​

MICHIGAN — More snow is on the way after a winter storm battered parts of Michigan over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy bands of lake effect snow rolling off Lake Superior dumped more than two-feet of snow in some parts of the Upper Peninsula over the weekend, according to the weather service.

Some of the highest snowfall totals included 27 inches in Ironwood and 24 inches in Munising, and an additional foot of snow is expected in parts of the eastern Upper Peninsula through Monday, according to the weather service.

Parts of northern Lower Michigan and western Michigan were also hit hard, with the highest snowfall totals including 22 inches in Gaylord and a foot in Mattawan, according to the weather service.

Those areas can also see up to an additional foot of snow through Monday as heavy bands of lake effect snow rolling off Lake Michigan has prompted winter storm warnings in those areas, according to the weather service.

Southeastern Michigan was largely spared of any significant snowfall, though quick bursts led to whiteout conditions and slippery roads, according to the weather service.

Michigan State Police reported over 150 crashes on Detroit area roads over the weekend.

Forecasters expect more snow this week across a frigid southeastern Michigan.

High temperatures across southeastern Michigan will struggle to hit the 30s early this week with chances for flurries before a stronger system moves into the region Wednesday, according to the weather service.

As of Monday morning, the clipper system can dump up to an inch of snow Wednesday when highs slightly warm into the upper 30s across southeastern Michigan, according to the weather service.

Highs will then fall back down and struggle to hit the 30s again with more snow chances this weekend across southeastern Michigan, according to the weather service.
