Don Walts Named Community House Artist of the Month

Don Walts, of Commerce Township, has been named The Community House Artist of the Month for August.

"Artist of the Month" is a Community House outreach program designed to promote the work of local artists. Each month, area artists exhibit and sell their work in the Martha Maxwell Gallery, located on the The Community House's upper level.

Walt's exhibit includes 25 acrylic pieces on large-scale cancas. Skillful use of color and texture emphasize the mood of each painting.

As an artist Walt began creating at an early age, participating in formal art training as early as four years old. Both of Walt’s grandmother and mother — artists in their own right — encouraged Don in creative endeavors in both sculpting and painting.

As an adult, Walt set his brushes aside to pursue a business career. His achievements include: owner of a successful interior design firm, inventor and a commercial real estate broker.

A disabling disease, Multiple Sclerosis, has now made it possible for Walt to devote time to his art. Now, as he triumphs over this each day, his courage and determination emanate throughout his works.

The public is welcome to view the artwork, Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Walt's work will be on display through Aug. 31.
