Roeper Students Receive Joyce Ivy Summer Scholarships

The Roeper School is pleased to announce that Junior Samantha Heiman, daughter of James and Lynn Heiman of Clarkston, and Sophomore Magdalena “Maddie” Wilson, daughter of Suzanne Wilson and Matthew Busdiecker of Royal Oak will be among the seventy young women who will receive a 2012 summer scholarship from the Joyce Ivy Foundation.

The Joyce Ivy Foundation, in its seventh year, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the academic advancement of high-potential female high school students and will provide partial and full scholarships to women for pre-college study at top colleges and universities.

This year’s class of Joyce Ivy Foundation Summer Scholars emerged from among a record number of applicants from throughout the Midwest, mirroring the increased numbers of applications for full-time study at leading universities and colleges nationwide at Ivy League and equivalent campuses.

Pre-college programs at these institutions provide valuable and broadening experiences to high school students aspiring to earn an undergraduate acceptance at a highly competitive college or university. Since the Joyce Ivy Foundation’s inception, former Summer Scholars have matriculated at all eight Ivy League colleges and universities as well as other leading higher education institutions including Wellesley, Vassar, the University of Chicago, and MIT, and have been the recipients of prestigious academic awards including Gates Foundation Millennium Scholar and Presidential Scholar.

“Every year our applicant pool grows stronger and the young women selected this year are outstanding in every respect,” said Erich Bagen, Joyce Ivy Foundation Board member and Chairman of the Joyce Ivy Foundation committee that selects its Summer Scholars. “Each scholar possesses a sterling academic record, a wide range of extracurricular activities, community service, high test scores and an ability to express themselves clearly in written essays. Even more importantly, they are all risk-takers.”
