Man Steals $140K In Clothing From Metro Detroit Lululemon Stores: Cops

Birmingham Police said they busted a significant organized crime ring that's responsible for retail frauds totaling over $140,000.

BIRMINGHAM, MI — A man is in trouble after police said they busted a significant organized crime ring that's responsible for retail frauds throughout Michigan totaling over $140,000.

David Malik Roberts, 27, was charged with first-degree felony retail fraud, felony identity theft and resisting and obstructing police.

Police said officers caught Roberts trying to steal clothes from a Lululemon store in downtown Birmingham on Feb. 12.

Police later determined that Roberts was one of many suspects who were stealing from retail stores, including Lululemon stores across the state, totaling over $140,000, police said.

Officials did not immediately release details about the other suspects, including their names and what charges they may face.

A further investigation showed the same group of suspects stole $6,000 in clothing from the Lululemon store in Detroit on Friday, police said.

The group then drove to a Detroit business, which police didn't identify, and dumped the clothes, police said.

Birmingham detectives then began watching the business with help from the Troy Special Investigation, which of comprised with officers from Troy, Auburn Hills, Royal Oak, Bloomfield and Birmingham.

After obtaining a search warrant, officers then searched the Detroit business and found 17 items from the Birmingham Lululemon store and a bunch of other stolen clothing, with a total value of around $41,000, police said.

Officers also found numerous illegal guns and stolen appliances from various places inside the business, police said.

The Troy Special Investigations Unit, Oakland County Narcotic Enforcement Team, South Oakland County Narcotics Intelligence Consortium and the Detroit Police Department assisted Birmingham Police with the investigation.
