Seaholm Defense Stingy in Season Opening Win

The Maples defense kept visiting Ann Arbor Pioneer scoreless in Thursday's opening game.

Birmingham Seaholm started the 2013-14 season with a 24-0 shutout of Ann Arbor Pioneer Thursday night at Maple Field, according to MHSAA.com. It's the school's second consecutive season opener without surrendering a point, a feat last year's team accomplished twice more in its first four games, which helped propel the Maples to the OAA Blue crown.

“This was huge, just a smashing effort in a bunch of different ways,” said Seaholm head coach Jim DeWald told miprepzone.com. “Our defense returns a lot of guys and our offense got better each snap of the game.”

Senior quarterback Brandon Altman played well in his first varsity start, netting 122 total yards (62 rushing, 60 passing), miprepzone.com reported. Dominic Sierpien and senior defensive back Andrew Barton each had eight tackles.

However, none of the Maples will be able to dwell on their performance very long. The team visits Auburn Hills Avondale next week in an early-season battle of anticipated division frontrunners. Avondale (1-0) also held its opponent scoreless Thursday, thrashing Redford Union 42-0.
