Here's some of the highlights of what's happening this week in and around Birmingham. Please leave a comment if you have an event to share.
The Birmingham City Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in City Hall. Among the agenda items is a proposal to host the Multi-Cultural Dance & Music Celebration on October 5, 2013 in Shain Park; an agreement with Municipal Consulting Services LLC for an executive compensation study for the city manager position; and eliminating the requirement for duplicate design reviews for projects by the Planning Board and Design Review Board. Tuesday Evening Ruff Readers. Join animals certified by Therapy Dogs International for a relaxing reading session from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Baldwin Public Library. Good for ages 6 and older. Registration required and available at 248-554-4683.
Special Family Night Concert. The city of Birmingham hosts a special family night at the In the Park Summer Concert Series with featured entertainer Sinjon Smith at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Country is the theme featuring line dancing and face painting. Water and ice cream will be available for purchase, and blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets are welcome.
Free Community Shred Day Take a pro-active step to prevent identity theft, and remove some clutter at the free shredding event Thursday sponsored by mBank Birmingham, the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce and E-Shred., at Seaholm High School, 2436 West Lincoln. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to the community. A three-box maximum applies.
Day on the Town. Birmingham's largest shopping event of the year returns Saturday with special deals, live music, children's activities and a Corvette show. From 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., discounted merchandise will be on display around Maple Road and Old Woodward Avenue, which will be closed to vehicle traffic.
