Clawson Schools to Expand Healthy Food Options

Students will see changes in the menu this year such as more whole-wheat foods and skim milk.

Students in Clawson schools can expect to see healthier food options on the menu this year.

Food Services Director Heather Holland said the school district will only serve whole-wheat products from now on. That means school cooks will be using whole-grain pizza bread, sandwiches, breadsticks, dinner rolls, chicken nugget breading and even pasta, Holland said.

"We are going healthier by the day," Holland said. "We're taking the staples that kids really like and making them as healthy as possible."

Last year, the district opted to stop serving fried food and bake more, Holland said.

Holland added that Clawson schools have switched to serving skim milk and the chocolate milk has no artificial coloring.
