Crack-Smoking Clinton Twp. Man Leads Cops on High-Speed Chase

Paul Phillip Amyot lead police on a chase through five communities Aug. 27 and now faces multiple charges ranging from operating a vehicle with the presence of a controlled substance to assault with a deadly weapon.

A 49-year-old Clinton Township man is facing a series of felony charges after leading police on a high-speed chase through five communities Monday.

Paul Phillip Amyot was arraigned Tuesday in 41-B District Court in Clinton Township on charges of fleeing and eluding police in the third degree, operating a vehicle with the presence of a controlled substance (third offense), assault with a deadly weapon and possession of cocaine, according to court documents.

Magistrate Daniel Goulett set bond at $50,000 cash or surety. Unable to post bond, Amyot was taken to the Macomb County Jail, The Macomb Daily reports.

Clinton Township Police say the chase started around 6:42 p.m. Aug. 27 when officers received a report of a driver smoking a cocaine pipe while traveling northbound on Gratiot.

When the driver, later identified as Amyot, noticed the patrol car following him, he drove faster, running several stop signs and at one point trying to hit the patrol car, according to police documents. The chase continued as the driver turned onto Metro Parkway to Van Dyke, where Clinton Township police ended the chase.

Amyot lost control of his vehicle minutes after the chase was ended, hitting a median and another car near Mound Road. Police report no one was hurt in the crash.

Sterling Heights Police arrested Amyot and held him for Clinton Township police, according to the report. With the help of a K9 unit, police found a crack pipe and other narcotic paraphernalia in the vehicle as well as two rocks of crack cocaine, according to the police report.

Amyot has a history of fleeing police, according to court records.
