Irish Eyes Will be Smiling on Macomb Co. Woman Named St. Patrick's Day Parade Marshal

St. Clair Shores resident Nora Cassidy has been named the grand marshal of the St. Patrick's Parade in Detroit.

Since the very first St. Patrick's Parade 55-years ago, Nora Cassidy has played a major role.

Her late husband, Seamus, was one of the founders of the first parade which was held in Dearborn.

In the years that followed, as the parade moved to Detroit and the current location on Michigan Ave., her family has been involved in the event making floats and also promoting those with Irish roots in the region.

This year she was selected as the grand marshal for the parade which attracted more than 65,000 people last year.

"She is a great ambassador of the Irish," said Michael Kelly, president of the United Irish Societies, which organizes the parade. "It is a great family day and a great day to celebrate the Irish."

The parade, which steps-off at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, runs along Michigan Ave. in Detroit from 6th to 14th street.

In addition to being selected as grand marshal for her contributions to the Irish community and organizations, Cassidy will represent United Irish Societies events throughout the year.

"It is an honor. I am humbled by it," said Cassidy, who calls the title an honor for all, not just her. "I am representing every Irishman in Metro Detroit and Michigan."

She is also proud of her Irish roots, and will continue to support and promote her heritage.

"The heritage, the culture it can not die," she said. "As long as I have a breath of air, it will not die."
