M-59, Hayes Road Intersection To Close
The M-59 and Hayes Road intersection will be closed for 10 days for lane reconstruction.
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A major intersection closing Wednesday is going to make commuting in portions of Macomb and Oakland counties a pain for drivers. The M-59 and Hayes Road intersection will be closed for 10 days for lane reconstruction, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Access will be maintained to all businesses on Hayes Road during the closure. MDOT says it will reconstruct the two right lanes of eastbound and westbound M-59 through the intersection.
“The project is on schedule, despite recent weather, and work is being performed in multiple locations,” MDOT Spokesperson Diane Cross said in a news release. “Driveway closures to businesses continue to be coordinated to allow at least one access point.”

MDOT is investing $60 million to reconstruct 3.7 miles of M-59 (Hall Road) between M-53 to Garfield Road in 2017 and between Garfield Road and Romeo Plank Road in 2018, Cross added. During this first year, work will include replacing all concrete with new asphalt, improving drainage, upgrading ramps and sidewalks to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and new sidewalk will be added to fill in the missing gaps along M-59.
New modern traffic signals, sign replacement, enhanced landscaping, and other aesthetic improvements are planned as well. During the second year, work will continue on both sides of M-59 between Garfield and Romeo Plank roads.

As for the intersection closing, Clinton Township, Sterling Heights, Utica, Macomb and Shelby townships will be impacted by the intersection closure.
The work on the eastbound M-59 bridge over M-53 is complete and currently has three lanes open to merge traffic into the remaining work zone. Westbound M-59 is expected to reopen to four lanes over M-53 later this week, including the ramp to southbound M-53, MDOT said.
Three lanes of eastbound M-59 remain open from M-53 to Schoenherr Road and westbound M-59 has three lanes open from Garfield Road to Schoenherr Road. The lane closures in these areas are in place to allow crews to safely work in the two right lanes of M-59 and address the many business driveways, access points, and cross streets in each direction.
