Shelby Township Man Charged In Macomb Co. Kidnapping Attempts: Police

The abduction attempts were thwarted by good Samaritans​, according to police.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A 23-year-old Shelby Township man was arrested in connection with multiple abduction attempts Tuesday in Macomb County, according to police.

The man first targeted a 15-year-old girl, who was walking on Clinton River Road east of Hayes Road at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to police.

Police said the man grabbed the girl around her head and neck and tried forcing her into the back of his car through the passenger door behind the driver's seat.

A nearby witness quickly intervened to help the girl run away and alert other residents who called 911, according to police.

The man then drove away from the area to the Clinton River Park North entrance in Sterling Heights where he approached a 7-year-old girl, according to police.

The man grabbed the young girl off her bicycle, put her in his car and tried driving away, according to police.

That abduction was also thwarted by good Samaritans, who then held the man until police arrived and arrested him in connection with the two abduction attempts, according to a Fox 2 Detroit report.

The Shelby Township man was charged with kidnapping - child enticement, reckless driving and assault and battery in the Sterling Heights incident. He was also charged with attempted unlawful imprisonment and assault and battery, in the Clinton Township incident.

He was placed in the Macomb County Jail. Bond information was not immediately released.

He faces life in prison on the kidnapping charge and up to five years for attempted unlawful imprisonment. The other charges are 93-day misdemeanors.

"The swift actions of these brave young girls and bystanders, combined with the relentless dedication of our law enforcement, have prevented what could have been a tragic situation. We will pursue justice to ensure the safety of our community," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.

Officials were still investigating the incidents.
