Residents Invited to Comment on Clinton Twp. Police and Fire Millage Renewal

A renewal hearing will be held on Sept. 10 at the Clinton Township Civic Center. All residents are welcome to attend.

Residents will have the opportunity to comment on the renewal of Clinton Township’s police and fire millages during a public hearing on Sept. 10 at the Civic Center.

The police and fire millages are levied annually on all real property and have remained a constant 5 and 4 mills respectively since their adoption.

Real property owners in the township will receive notice in the mail of this hearing the week of Sept. 4. However, as these millages will continue as renewals in the years to come, the township board voted to suspend future mailings to save some $8,000 in printing and postage costs.

Township attorney Jack Dolan said should the millage amounts ever be changed, notices will again be mailed to those affected.

The public hearing is set for Sept. 10 during the regularly scheduled township meeting at 6:30 p.m. By law, a notice of this hearing must appear in a local newspaper of record – The Macomb Daily in the case of Clinton Township.

Normally it would fall to the clerk to make this arrangement, but citing staffing issues, Clerk George Fitzgerald told the board Monday he would not be able to fulfill this responsibility. “Because I don’t simply have the manpower or the ability or the opportunity to do that.”

Supervisor Robert Cannon did not accept Fitzgerald’s explanation, given the fact that only an hour earlier.

"I think you can get an ad run in The Macomb Daily," Cannon said.

As a compromise of sorts, the assessor’s department agreed to post the notice.
