Black Pepper Sold In Metro Detroit Recalled Due To Salmonella Risk

DEARBORN, MI — A Dearborn food distributor recalled ground black pepper Monday due to salmonella concerns, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

UBC Food Distributors said the recall affects 7-ounce containers of ground pepper under the brand name Baraka. The recall also affects products that have a "best before" date of January 2026 and a UPC code: 8 22514 26626 6.

Health officials urged those who have bought the 7-ounce container of ground black pepper to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there were no reported illnesses in connection with the ground black pepper, according to officials.

Salmonella infection symptoms, including fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps, usually start six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover within a week without medical treatment, according to the CDC.

Officials said the pepper products were distributed to retail stores across the U.S., but did not specify which ones.
