Dearborn Celebrates Black History Month With 3 Events
Here's a look at the community events around Dearborn celebrating Black History Month this February.

DEARBORN, MI — Downtown Dearborn is hosting three special events in celebration of Black History Month to recognize the history, culture, diversity and inclusion of the special month. There's three events planned, each free and open to all ages.
“This is worth all the time, sweat and creativity," said Julia Kapilango, East Dearborn Downtown Development Authority Board Director. "Seeing our community come together to celebrate Dearborn’s diversity and inclusion is an honor and privilege.”

- Rosa Parks Day of Courage and Birthday Movie Screening
Tuesday, February 4 | 6 – 8 p.m.
Arab American National Museum;13624 Michigan Avenue
Feb. 4, 2020 is the 107th birthday of Rosa Parks. Join the Motor City Freedom Riders, City Hall Artspace and Downtown Dearborn Development Authorities to watch "The Rosa Parks Story," an award-winning 2002 biopic starring Angela Bassett. Screening will begin promptly at 6:15 p.m.
- Homage to Black Excellence
Friday, February 21 | 6 – 8 p.m.
The CONNECTOR at City Hall Artspace; 13600 John Nagy Drive
This event is an eclectic collection of visual arts, music and fashion. In celebration of Black History Month, Resident Artists have curated an exhibition honoring Red, Black and Green, symbolizing Black Excellence in leadership, economic development, arts, politics, entertainment and education. There will be a runway fashion show featuring pieces from iconic brand Al Wissam, clothing creators that live in Dearborn City Hall Artspace. The program will also pay homage with a live discussion with renowned Detroit music producer Prevail on the impact and importance of Al Wissam’s fashion in Hip-Hop and black culture, which are making their way into celebrities’ wardrobes, such as 50 Cent. He will also provide the soundtrack for the night. In addition, State Rep. Jewell Jones will make a special presentation that highlights the community engagement of local resident artists of City Hall Artspace.
“I am so excited,” stated Monica Feliciano, resident Artspace Artist. “We’ve been working pretty hard to get this event up and going. Several artists that live here are participating.”

- Sisters Cashing In
Saturday, February 29 | 4 – 6 p.m.
The CONNECTOR at City Hall Artspace; 13600 John Nagy Drive
“Sisters Cashing In” is a gathering of black women entrepreneurs, boss ladies, musicians, chefs, athletes, scientists and creatives, who will meet in East Downtown Dearborn. Come and join the National Association of Black Women Entrepreneurs (NABWE) and Healthy Wealthy and Wise Change Agents for a social evening with a round table discussion and the opportunity to make new connections and network.
“It’s so dope to be a part of something in Downtown Dearborn. We are literally making history,” stated Kalette Willis, resident artist of Artspace.
This month’s theme is Downtown Dearborn. Guests can learn about the Black Dearborn population, federal and local incentives for economically disadvantaged/Black women businesses. Benefits include grant funding, leasing space and more to help achieve goals and transform lives.
