Public Service Days Start Monday in Dearborn

City moves Public Service Days up a month to better align with other neighborhood cleanup efforts

DEARBORN, Mich. — The City of Dearborn has moved its “Public Service Days” up one full month this year and will start on Monday, March 6.

According to city officials, residents must remove their parked vehicles from the street on their regular trash day between 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. Vehicles parked on the street during those hours on a neighborhood’s Public Service Day/trash day are subject to tickets.

“Residents across the city pay for services with their taxes and deserve to have them delivered in their neighborhoods in a thorough and effective manner,” Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. said in a statement. “Keeping parked cars off the streets gives us that chance.”

Even if trash is picked up before 4 p.m., vehicles must remain off the street, he added. Other services, like street sweeping, could still take place until 4 p.m., O’Reilly said.

Last fall, Dearborn City Council approved an extension to Public Service Days, which had traditionally started in April. This year, Public Service Days will stay in effect until Dec. 15.

City officials believe the extension will better align the no-parking dates to other Dearborn services, including yard waste and loose leaf collection schedules. Changing weather patterns also mean other services, such as street sweeping and road repair, could be done earlier and later in the year, said O’Reilly.

Because of the change of dates this year, an “education period” between early March and early April will be in effect. Signs with the new no-parking dates are currently being installed in neighborhoods across the city, city officials said. Once the signs are up, Public Service Days parking rules will be enforced.
