Deer Illegally Killed Near Telegraph Road In Metro Detroit: Police

BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP, MI — Michigan officials are investigating after a deer was illegally killed this past weekend in metro Detroit, according to police.

Officers responded to the area of the area of Telegraph and West roads in Brownstown Township after a 911 caller reported gunshots in the area, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found a deer carcass and the suspected illegal hunter, according to police.

Working with Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, they went on to find a suspected hunting site, a spent shell casing and a .270 caliber rifle that had been hidden in the woods, according to police.

Officials did not identify the suspected hunter. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation.

Firearm season began Saturday and runs through Nov. 30. Licensed hunters may only take deer from authorized hunting grounds across Michigan between. Muzzleloader season is from Dec. 5-14, according to the DNR.

Police said the only authorized for gun hunting in Brownstown Township is the Pointe Mouilee State Game Area.

Those who violate can face criminal charges, seizure of their firearms and deer and lose their hunting licenses, according to the DNR.

"Violations not only put wildlife at risk but can endanger our community," police said.
