Hail and High Winds to Hit Michigan Tonight (Expired)

Isolated tornado also possible, according to National Weather Service, as severe thunderstorm watch is in effect.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of southern Michigan Sunday evening through 2 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. The storms could include cloud-to-ground lightning, winds up to 60 mph and large hail.

The storms are expected to hit the metro Detroit area between 10 p.m. and midnight. An isolated tornado is also possible, according to the NWS. The storms will move southeast from Lake Michigan at about 40 mph.

The entire Great Lakes region is experiencing severe weather.

Earlier this morning, a gust of 65 mph wind toppled a camper and trailer on the Mackinac Bridge. The winds forced the Mackinac Bridge Authority to close the Mackinac Bridge to all vehicles but the bridge was reopened around noon.

In the Chicago area, high winds recorded at 54 mph near O’Hare International Airport blew over a tent at a suburban festival, killing one person and injuring 15 to 20 other people, three of them severely.
