2 Hurt In Shooting Near Detroit Fireworks Show: Police

Police are looking for two people in connection with the shooting.

DETROIT — Police are looking for two people in connection with a shooting that left people hurt in downtown Detroit near Monday night's fireworks show.

The shooting happened at 10:04 p.m. near Larned and Randolph streets, near the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, just before the fireworks started, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said.

Bettison said a 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old Woman were injured in the shooting. One victim was struck in the hand and the other was hit in the leg, Bettison said, and added both injuries were non-life-threatening.

Investigators reviewed video footage and determined the suspected shooter was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue shorts and white and blue Nike Air Force One shoes, Bettison said.

Video showed the suspect shooter with a gun in his hand and a muzzle flash, Bettison said.

Police are also looking for an individual who they said was with the suspected shooter. Bettison said he was wearing a white T-shirt, white pants and white sneakers. He added that both suspects are between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with slim builds.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a fight that involved a group of young people in the area. Police said one of those suspects pulled out a handgun and fired at least two shots, hitting the victims.

Officers responded to the shooting within minutes, but both suspects fled into a parking structure after the shooting, Bettison said.

The shooting happened outside of the area where police have metal detectors in Hart Plaza and Spirit Plaza, Bettison said.

Officers did detain one person, but later released them when they determined they were not involved in the shooting, Bettison said.

Bettison encouraged the suspects to turn themselves in to the police.

"We expect to have them apprehended shortly, and I encourage them to turn themselves in," the chief said. "We don't have names yet, but we know who they are."
