3-year-old Child Seriously Injured In Detroit Freeway Crash: Police

DETROIT — A 3-year-old child was seriously injured in a Thursday morning crash on a Detroit freeway, according to Michigan State Police.

The crash happened at 9:40 a.m. Thursday on eastbound Interstate 96 and Michigan 39 (Southfield Freeway), according to police.

Police said a 32-year-old woman was driving a car with a 3-year-old passenger inside when she was involved in a 3-car crash on the freeway. The child was thrown into the front windshield from the backseat of the car, according to police.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, according to police.

Police said the 32-year-old woman was the at-fault driver in the crash.

Police said there were no other major injuries in the crash, which is still under investigation.

No other details about the crash were released.

"Drivers are responsible for all the passengers in their vehicle," said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. "It is even more important to ensure that children are belted in to the proper child seat. Every trip, every time."
