Detorit Area Man Arrested After Wild Chase, Attempted Carjacking: Police

Police said the driver smashed through the bridge's toll gate before his car eventually broke down and he tried carjacking a woman.

ST. IGNACE, MI — A Detroit area man was arrested after leading police on a chase over the Mackinac Bridge and an attempted carjacking in the Upper Peninsula earlier this week, according to police.

Jack Maibach, 27, of Northville, was charged with carjacking, assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer and fourth-degree fleeing a police officer.

He was placed in the Mackinac County Jail with a bond set at $25,000. His next court hearing was scheduled for June 3.

The incident happened Monday afternoon when officers spotted Maibach speeding in Pellston, roughly 18 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge, police said.

Officers tried to stop the car, but Maibach continued moving toward the Mackinac Bridge, police said.

Officers called off the chase due to safety concerns as Maibach continued northbound in the southbound lane over the bridge toward St. Ignace, police said.

After smashing through the toll gate, Maibach continued evading officers before his car broke down near Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace, police said.

That's where Maibach tried to carjack a woman who had her child inside the vehicle, but she drove away with Maibach clinging to the outside before he fell off, police said.

Officers then found Maibach nearby on foot at the Hampton Inn on State Street where he "violently resisted" officers, but was eventually arrested, police said.
