Detroit Man Charged After Unsecured Gun Used In Teen Shooting: Police

An 18-year-old boy was injured in the shooting and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to police.

DETROIT — A 26-year-old Detorit man is facing charges after police said his unsecured gun was used in a shooting involving teens Monday.

Geris Edward Gordon was charged with firearms – safe storage violations – premises under individual’s control – minor present and injured self or another, which carries a five-year maximum penalty.

He was placed in jail and given a $25,000 bond.

The shooting happened at 5:30 p.m. Monday at an apartment in the 9100 block of Kercheval Street in Detroit, according to police.

Police said Gordon's 18-year-old brother and a 13-year-old boy were inside Gordon's home where they found the unsecured weapon.

Police believe the 13-year-old was handling the gun when it fired, hitting the 18-year-old boy in the wrist. The teen was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

"I am again asking gun owners to safely store their weapons inside their homes - or wherever they have their weapons. This is not a hard ask and compliance is very simple," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement.
