Former UAW VP Joe Ashton Sentenced To Federal Prison

Joe Ashton, 72, the former vice president of the UAW, was sentenced Tuesday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison.

DETROIT, MI — A former top official in the United Auto Workers union has been sentenced to federal prison following accusations he took kickbacks from a union vendor, according to reports.

Joe Ashton, 72, the former vice president of the UAW, was sentenced Tuesday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for the crimes, making it the second-longest sentence issued through a long federal crackdown of corruption in the auto industry, The Detroit News reported.

Ashton's sentencing should be one of the final in a federal investigation into corruption in the auto industry that has led to 15 convictions of auto industry figures, including former UAW presidents Gary Jones and Dennis Williams.
