Ground Beef Packed In Detroit Recalled Due To Possible E. Coli

Officials recalled roughly 167,277 pounds of ground beef that was packaged by the Wolverine Packing Co.​ in Detroit.

DETROIT — Ground beef that was packaged in Detroit and distributed to restaurants across the nation was recalled Wednesday due to possible E. coli contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Officials recalled roughly 167,277 pounds of ground beef that was packaged by the Wolverine Packing Co. in Detroit.

Both fresh and frozen ground beef products are included in the recall. The fresh beef has a use by date of Nov. 14 and the frozen beef has a production date of Oct. 22, 2024. They also have the establishment number "EST. 2574B" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Officials said some restaurants may still have the beef, which they encouraged the establishments to either throw away or return it.

The contamination was discovered on Nov. 13 when officials learned that several people had become sick in Minnesota, according to officials.

Those illnesses, which started between Nov. 2 and 10, were linked to ground beef from Wolverine and samples collected a few days later tested positive for E. coli O157, according to officials.

As of Thursday, 15 people have been sickened by the beef in Minnesota, according to officials.

E. coli can cause serious symptoms, including high fever, diarrhea, consistent vomiting, and dehydration. Anyone who experiences any of these symptoms is advised to call their healthcare provider.
