'Rest In Peace, Big Boy': Detroit Police Mourn Loss Of Remi

The 14-year-old member of the mounted police unit had been with the department for six years and was a staple at parades and other events.

DETROIT — The Detroit Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own after officials announced that of the mounted police unit's favorite horses has died on Tuesday.

Remi, a 14-year-old Percheron Morgan cross, had been with the department for six years, the department said in a social media post.

Remi along with his rider, Officer Matthew Miller, will be remembered as a great team, officials said. The pair were regulars Greek Town, Mexican Town, visiting kids at schools, football games and leading parades with their assigned beat in downtown Detroit, officials said.

"His stature was a perfect fit for controlling crowds when needed and his gentle demeanor and beauty suited those that wanted to pet him and pose with him for pictures," officials wrote in the online tribute to the horse, who weighed 1,800 pounds and stood at 17 hands, according to the news release.

"Thank you Remi for your dedicated service. Rest in peace, big boy."
