Severe Storms Likely Across Detroit Area Wednesday: What To Know

Forecasters warned the storms will be capable of producing heavy downpours, winds greater than 70 miles per hour, large hail and tornadoes.

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — Severe thunderstorms are possible across southeastern Michigan on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The strong storms will develop in the afternoon hours on Wednesday and sweep across the region sometime between 7 p.m. and midnight, the weather service said.

Forecasters warned the storms will be capable of producing heavy downpours, winds greater than 70 miles per hour, large hail and a few tornadoes.

Areas west of U.S. 23 face an enhanced risk (level 3/5) for severe weather Wedensday, while the Detroit area remains a slight risk (level 2/5).

The storms will fade away during the overnight hours, but showers may linger into early Thursday morning in some spots across the region, the weather service said.

Hot temperatures then move into the region Friday as highs will be near 90 degrees across southeastern Michigan, the weather service said.

It will only get hotter from there as highs will climb well into the 90s through the first half of next week, the weather service said.
