ROMULUS, MI — Sheetz announced Thursday it has started construction on its second Wayne County location.

The new 6,000-square-foot gas station and convenience chain will open at 29225 Smith Road, Romulus, sometime this fall, according to business officials.

It will feature its award-winning Made-to-Order menu, which allows residents, or "Sheetz Freakz" to order any of Sheetz’s customized drinks or food items around the clock. There will also be eight fueling islands for vehicles, but it will not include any fueling options for tractor-trailers.

The new Romulus location will be its second spot in the city after Sheetz opened its first Michigan store roughly 4 miles from Metro Detroit airport last summer.

"Since opening our first store last August, the response from the community has been incredible—from the energy in the store to the conversations we’ve had with customers and city leaders," President and CEO of Sheetz Travis Sheetz said. "It’s clear that Romulus residents are hungry for more options, and we’re proud to deliver with another location that brings our signature Made-to-Order food, unbeatable convenience, and commitment to top-notch service even closer to them."

Sheetz crews have also begun construction on a Macomb County store at 23 Mile Road just east of Interstate 94 in Chesterfield Township. That spot is expected to open sometime this summer or early fall.

It's part of a plan to open between 50 and 60 locations across southeastern Michigan over the next five to six years.

Crews are expected to break ground on more than a ten other Detroit metro locations later this year and into 2026, including:

  • Farmington Hills, 29455 Grand River Avenue
  • Macomb, 45075 North Gratiot Avenue
  • Novi, 39471 West 12 Mile Road
  • Warren, 5970 12 Mile Road
  • Eastpointe, 19001 East 9 Mile Road
  • Fraser, Southwest corner of 14 Mile and Utica roads
  • Macomb, 45011 Garfield Road
  • Taylor, 8200 Telegraph Road
  • Taylor, 20623 Eureka Road
  • Warren, 31925 Van Dyke Avenue
  • Ypsilanti, 2103 West Michigan Avenue

While many metro Detroit communities have welcomed Sheetz, some have rejected site plans after residents voiced concerns about traffic, noise and light pollution.

Farmington Hills, Livonia and Rochester Hills are among some communities that have rejected a site location.

"While I know some cities have expressed concerns about Sheetz entering their markets, our experience has been overwhelmingly positive," said Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight. "In fact, the presence of Sheetz has raised the standard for everyone. Competition has made our local businesses better, brought prices down, and given residents more choice."
