Strong Storms Friday, Extreme Heat Watch: Metro Detroit Weather

Forecasters do not expect any severe weather Friday, but warned the storms could produce heavy rain and strong winds.

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep across southeastern Michigan on Friday as temperatures prepare to heat up, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said the storms will move into the region sometime between 2 and 8 p.m. Friday when highs reach the mid-80s. Forecasters do not expect any severe weather, but warned the storms could produce heavy rain and strong winds up to 50 miles per hour.

Thunderstorms can also hit the southeastern Michigan region early Saturday morning, as a warm front moves into the area, the weather service said.

Forecasters believe those storms will likely hit areas north of Interstate 69, but areas north of Interstate 94 are under a marginal risk for severe storms on Saturday.

The weather service said wind and hail are the primary threats.

Temperatures will reach the low 90s Saturday before highs move into record territory Sunday through Tuesday, the weather service said.

Daytime highs will soar well into the 90s and feel like 100-105 degrees Sunday through Tuesday, the weather service said.

All of southeastern Michigan is under an extreme heat watch Saturday through Tuesday.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates. Check with local emergency management officials for information on cooling center availability," the weather service said.
