Tornadoes, 70 MPH Winds, Large Hail Possible Across Detroit Area Wednesday

There is a slight to enhanced risk for severe weather Wednesday in southeastern Michigan.

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — Multiple waves of thunderstorms are expected across southeastern Michigan on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The first wave of scattered thunderstorms will hit the region sometime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday when highs reach the upper 80s, the weather service said.

A stronger line of storms will then sweep through the region sometime between 4 and 10 p.m. Forecasters warned those storms will be capable of producing heavy downpours, winds greater than 70 miles per hour, large hail and multiple tornadoes.

Forecasters believe there will be roughly 1-1.5 inches of rain on Wednesday, but some areas could see up to 3 inches of rain.

Areas in Wayne County, Livingston, Washtenaw, Monroe and Lenawee counties are under an enhanced risk (level 3/5) for severe weather. The rest of the region is under a slight risk (level 2/5).

Showers will stick around in some spots across southeastern Michigan to start Thursday, before afternoon sunshine pushes highs to near 80 degrees, the weather service said.

Highs will stick to the 80s on Friday before a heat wave hits the area with multiple days of 90-degree temperatures and triple-digit heat indices, the weather service said.
