USS Detroit Arrives and Docks in Front of GM Renaissance Center

Eight days of of tours, VIP visits, celebrations and other events​, along with an official commissioning ceremony are planned.

DETROIT, MI — The USS Detroit arrived today at the GM Renaissance Center for a week of public tours, events and a commissioning ceremony.

The USS Detroit is a Freedom-class littoral combat ship and is the sixth U.S. warship to be named after the city of Detroit. The USS Detroit is a fast, agile ship designed for a variety of missions in coastal waters as well as humanitarian relief missions. Of the six Navy combat ships named after Detroit, this will be the only one actually commissioned in Detroit.

This versatile ship is capable of open ocean operations and its modular design lends itself to reconfiguration for antisubmarine warfare, mine warfare, or surface warfare missions as-needed.

According to a release, the new combat ship was launched and christened on October 18, 2014 by Mrs. Barbara Levin, the ship's sponsor and wife of long serving, retired United States Senator Carl Levin, during ceremonies at the Marinette Marine Shipyard.

Eight days of of tours, VIP visits, celebrations and other events are planned with the official commissioning ceremony slated for the morning of October 22.
