The 2025 Catholic Lenten season starts March 5. Here's some of the best places to grab a fish fry in the Detroit area.

METRO DETROIT — Lent started March 5 for Catholic residents, which means local churches, eateries, bars and VFWs will host fish fry events.

Here's our roundup of featured Friday fish fries around Metro Detroit.

Royal Oak First

Where: 320 W. Seventh, Royal Oak

When: 4:30-7 p.m. March 7 and 21 and April 4.

What's on the menu? Pike perch dinner, deep-fried zander, baked potato or fries, coleslaw, roll and butter, dessert and a beverage. There are also cod plates, chicken tenders and kids meals.

St. Isaac Jogues

Where: 21100 Madison, St. Clair Shores

When: 4:30-8 p.m. Fridays March 7-April 11

What's on the menu? Beer-battered cod, swordfish, shrimp, fish tacos, macaroni and cheese, pizza and pierogi dinners with one side plus coleslaw, dessert and a soft drink.

How much? Dinners cost between $6-$26

St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit

Where: 2363 Rochester, Troy

When: 4:30-7:30 p.m. Fridays March 7-April 18 (Reservations required only for the April 18 dinner).

What's on the menu? Beer-battered and fried or baked fish dinners with fries, coleslaw and coffee or tea. There are also kids meals and a full bar.

How much? Dinners are between $15-$17, $7 for kids and $2-$5 for sides.

American Legion Post 351

Where: 46146 Cass, Utica

When: 4 - 7 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 28 through April 18

What's on the menu? Cod or chicken, plus fries, slaw, hush puppies and mac and cheese

How much? Dinners are $15 adults and $10 kids (cash only)

Scotty Simpson’s Fish & Chips

Where: 22200 Fenkell, Detroit

When: Open 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and 2-8 p.m. Saturday

What's on the menu? Best known for old-school fish fry, including cod and other seafood.

How much? Prices typically range between $7.50 to $20

Hazel’s

Where: 1 Peabody, Birmingham

When: Open for lunch and Tuesday - Sunday

What's on the menu? Best-known for stone crab dishes, lobster bisque, fish sandwiches and a classic fish and chips dish with fries, coleslaw and a malt vinegar aioli.

Where: 8311 Wilson Drive, Shelby Township

When: Every Friday 4-7 p.m. March 7 - April 18

What's on the menu? Two pieces of beer-battered fish or six pieces of fried shrimp, french fries, coleslaw, dinner roll, cookie, pop or coffee. There is also a kids menu.

How much? Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for kids. Extra fish or shrimp is $4 a piece and $3 for a side of mac-and-cheese.
