Traveling to face the Adrian Maples in district play on Monday, the Dexter varsity soccer team established itself, winning 9-1.

Though it wasn’t until just over 15 minutes into the game that Dexter scored their first goal, they dominated play throughout the whole game. Jake Kilian picked up a rebound from a shot and fired it past the Maple keeper to set the tone.

Another 15 minutes without a goal, Andrew Foghel scored one of his two goals when Kilian passed the ball through a gap in the defense, to go up 2-0.

Minutes later, David Innis received a diagonal pass from Evan Burke, and buried it in the goal. With nine minutes left in the half, Tony Pisto took a long free-kick that Cory Poirier deflected into Burke for the next goal.

Burke scored again, less than a minute later, when Thomas Cansfield played a ball into him. Cansfield assisted again with a ball to Bobby Toth to put the Dreads up 6-0 with 7:43 left in the first half. Dexter was caught off guard when a long ball was played in for a breakaway on Dexter keeper Rhys Moller, and the Maple’s only goal.

In the second half, Kilian passed a ball to Pisto who went on a 38-yard dribbling tear and fired it past the keeper. Four minutes later David Innis found Kilian, who played a ball into Nils Valdmanis for Dexter’s eighth goal. Pisto fed Foghel a ball to finish the game, 9-1 with 26:38 left on the clock.

The eight-goal spread ended the game due to the mercy rule.

Dexter, 15-5-3, plays in the district semi-final Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Tecumseh.
