HOLLY, MI — A metro Detroit veteran cemetery says it has to cancel its Veterans Day ceremony due to the government shutdown.

Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly said Wednesday the ceremony was canceled "due to the ongoing government shutdown and lack of appropriated funds."

The cemetery, which is run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' National Cemetery Administration, said it will remain open from dawn to dusk daily for visitors who want to stop by and honor the veterans.

"We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we all take time to remember the brave men and women who served our nation," cemetery officials said in a social media post on Wednesday.

Cemetery officials also said they were unable to host a scheduled headstone cleaning event on Oct. 18, largely due to staffing issues because of the shutdown.
