Nicholas graduated top of his class at the University of Michigan Law School. He was awarded the Henry M.Bates Scholarship which is a faculty nominated award and considered the highest honor at Michigan Law. It is presented to outstanding seniors in the Law School, with account taken of scholarship in legal studies, personality, character, extracurricular interests, and promise of a distinguished career. He was also awarded the 1908 scholarship for highest GPA entering the final year of law school.
