Bank of America Brings VR, Digital Banking Tools to more than 2,500 Students at Tech Week Grand Rapids

Immersive showcase connects West Michigan youth with technology, careers, and financial education

More than 2,500 students from Kent and Ottawa counties explored cutting-edge technology during as part of Tech Week Grand Rapids at the Grandville Robotics and Engineering Center on Tuesday. The Student Tech Showcase featured Bank of America and more than 30 other employers and organizations, giving students a hands-on look at how virtual reality and digital tools can shape both career pathways and financial future.

The bank’s virtual reality (VR) training platform developed by The Academy at Bank of America anchored the exhibit. Students also interacted with 6-foot-tall, back-to-back “Padzilla” touch screens, where they tested the bank’s digital Family Banking and Life Plan tools designed to help families budget, set goals, and make informed financial decisions.

In addition to Bank of America’s exhibit, the event featured dozens of other employers, colleges and universities, each providing students with an inside look at careers connected to technology. Organizers said their goal was to highlight how innovation is shaping industries across West Michigan, and to encourage students to picture themselves in those roles.

Brandon Spangler, vice president and consumer banking market leader at Bank of America, said giving young people that vision was the most important outcome.

“It’s really about investing in the next generation of tech talent here in Grand Rapids,” Spangler said. “When students put on a VR headset or explore our Life Plan tool, they can start to picture themselves not only in careers in banking or finance, but in technology-driven roles across industries. The experience makes learning more immersive and shows how technology can connect directly to their future.”
