- Grand Rapids School’s Security Chief Larry Johnson described what active shooter training looks like for GRPS. Johnson, who serves Grand Rapids as Assistant Superintendent, Chief of Staff, and Executive Director of Public Safety & School Security, says the district’s active shooter plan is designed around staying safe for 20 minutes, the time it may take for law enforcement to arrive. One of the most important elements in the GRPS safety program is silence, to make sure the person on the other side of the door that wants to cause harm can’t hear what’s going on inside the room. - The Grand Rapids Gold is launching its NBA Cares Season of Giving for the holidays. On Dec. 4, the Gold will partner with University of Michigan Health-West to honor health care workers in Grand Rapids for its Health Care Heroes and Holiday Hats theme night. The Gold will then partner with The Children’s Foundation on Dec. 15 to highlight the Children’s Healing Center, which provides a year-round recreational center for children with weakened immune systems and is supported in part by The Children’s Foundation.
