Here are the top stories today in Grand Rapids:

  1. A Grand Rapids a capella group sang at the 80th commemoration of the Pearl Harbor attack in Hawaii. A spokesperson with the Grand Rapids Chapter of Sweet Adelines said they were the only musical group from Michigan invited to perform on Dec. 7 at the USS Arizona Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony and the USS Missouri Flag Folding Ceremony. The chapter was also performing a concert series that was part of the official Remembrance Day ceremonies. (WWMT)
  2. Mel Trotter Ministries is preparing to open its new overflow shelter in downtown Grand Rapids, which will have a maximum capacity of 75 beds and will serve the area when the primary shelter is full. Dennis Van Kampen, the CEO of the nonprofit, says the location at Division Street and Cherry Street Southeast has been under construction for the past two months. The project cost around $500,000 to convert the space into a shelter and the organization has a one-year lease with options to extend. (WOODTV)
