DTE Officials to Meet with Grosse Pointe Woods Council, Public

Officials are scheduled to appear before the council Monday July 18 during their committee of the whole meeting at 7 p.m. Details about an upcoming project are likely to reviewed, according to the Woods city manager.

DTE officials will discuss the power grid in that has historically been plagued by power outages Monday before the city council in the group's informal work session meeting.

Their appearance comes following in which many homes and business were without power for 20-plus hours. The lengthy outage is blamed on a lightening strike, Woods City Administrator Al Fincham said.

Obviously lightening cannot be stopped or controlled, he said. The bigger reason for DTE's appearance on Monday is to explain why the power grid serving the neighborhood plagued by outages does not have the proper ability to maintain service.

The neighborhood--off Mack Avenue to Marter Road from Vernier Road to the St. Clair Shores border--is filled with portable generators. The humming of which is an easily identifiable signal of a power outage.

Most recently, the power outage followed a strong storm that swept through the area overnight with high, damaging winds. The outage led , who told Fincham.

Fincham believes DTE has plans to upgrade the power grid in the future and believes more details about it will be revealed. In addition to being present for council questions, residents concerns will be addressed, Fincham said.

The Woods experienced more power outages the following day--essentially hours after the area regained power, .

The area has not experienced any lengthy outages since, even when strong storms rolled through causing massive outages through the Detroit metro area--including  in mid-July. 

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in a conference room across from the council chambers at the on Mack Avenue.
