Grosse Pointe Adds Smart911 Services
Free service allows cell and landlines users to create safety profiles

The Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety opted into Smart911 service starting this month. Smart911, a free cell (and landline) service, allows users to create personal safety profiles to assist should they need to call 911 for help. Users with no landline services, for example, can include their home addresses, information about their vehicles, and information about medical conditions and other information critical to first responders.
Grosse Pointe residents can visit theSmart911 website to opt in. When registered users dial 911, their safety profile automatically displays for the 911 dispatcher, who relays it to first responders. The service, already available in Boston and Portland, among other large cities, and is used state-wide in Wyoming, where many residents are cell-only, weather is often treacherous, and people might otherwise be stranded outdoors in freezing weather.
