Moms Talk: Per Pupil State Funding Cuts

This week's topic focuses on the recently debated state budget, calling for hundreds of dollars of per pupil spending.

An on-going discussion among parents, educators, state and elected officials has focused on per pupil funding in Michigan. As new Gov. Rick Snyder aims to revamp the state, he has also aired the need to reinvent the schools and educational system.Β

Critics of his plan say he is too focused on business and is trying to apply a business mentality to schools. In an attempt to balance the 2011/2012 fiscal year budget, he also suggested using the School Aid Fund to fill the gap rather than allow that money to continue its originally intended purpose of supporting public education.

The suggested $470 per pupil cut comes in a time when budgets are already dwindling due to dropping home values and the cost of education is rising. Legislators are still debating the topic in Lansing but the cuts will have a real impact on students.Β

Grosse Pointe teachers and parents have actively campaigned against it as many across the state have. Most recently there was a rally in Lansing with state legislators organized by the Michigan Parent Teacher Organization, of which Grosse Pointe parents were encouraged to attend.

This week's question: What are your thoughts about the cuts in per pupil spending in Michigan? How do you believe this could affect your child and his or her education?Β
