Hundreds of people on 216 boats began in the 2011 Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race Saturday. Some have already finished and others had to withdraw from the race due to boat malfunctions or problems.
Joan Watton photographed the start of the race Saturday and plans to be at the finish line. She shared several photographs with Patch.
Meanwhile, Blitz--the boat from which --has withdrawn from the race after the boat began taking on water. The crew is safe and they expect the boat to return to Detroit Sunday.Â

The race, which began in 1925, is the longest consecutively freshwater race in the world, according to Bayview Yacht Club's website–the hub for all race information.

The site also contains YellowBrick tracking of the boats, which allows GPS tracking and mapping of each boat throughout the race.
There are spread across all divisions. Most are from the metro area but there is at least one each from Zurich, TX and Lake Geneva, WI.Â
