Police Blotter: Pickpocket, BlackBerry Taken, Wine Glass Testing

Police in the Pointes are investigating a variety of reports, including a pickpocket at a rummage sale, a BlackBerry phone taken at a business and more.

A Cottage Hospital emergency room doctor called Grosse Pointe Farms police May 6 after a woman arrived for treatment with an elevated heart rate and other symptoms.Β 

The 39-year-old Farms woman told medical officials and police that she had been having a glass of wine at her home May 6 when her husband showed up to pick up their son for hockey.Β She and her husband are going through a divorce; he asked if he could have a glass of wine as well. She then went to the front door to receive a pizza delivery.

Upon returning to the kitchen, she found that her wine glass had been refilled.Β Her husband drank his glass of wine quickly and then left with their son. She finished her glass too and a short time later began feeling strange.

She noticed residue in the bottom of her wine glass but not her husband's and called a friend and a relative, who recommended she go to the hospital.Β The woman drove her daughter to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial and then drove herself to the hospital.Β 

The emergency room doctor told police the woman had a fast heart rate, slurred speech and was complaining of feeling "heavy-footed."Β Police took the wine glass into custody and it has been sent to the crime lab for analysis and testing, Detective Rick Good said.Β

Pickpocket at rummage sale

A 42-year-old Farms woman reported her wallet stolen while she attended a rummage sale in the 200 block of Moross Road on May 6. The woman told officers she believes she was pick-pocketed because she had her wallet in her coat pocket and had used it shortly before arriving to the sale, according to a report.Β 

Bike thefts

A 46-year-old Farms woman reported a mountain bike stolen from her garage in the 400 block of LaBelle Road overnight from May 2 to 3. The bike is valued at $250, according to a report. Another bicycle was stolen from a garage in the 100 block of Cloverly Road April 29, according to a report.

BlackBerry dropped, taken

A Farms man reported his BlackBerry telephone stolen April 30 after he said he unknowingly dropped it inside a business in 18700 block of Mack Avenue. He realized he dropped as as soon as he left the business, returned and called the phone. Another customer answered it but then refused to give it back to the Farms resident, according to a report.

Drunk driving reports

Grosse Pointe Shores police arrested a 50-year-old Detroit man May 9 for drunken driving after he was stopped for the level of tinting on his car windows on Lake Shore Road. The man was also carrying a 9 mm handgun for which he has a permit. He did not cooperate when officers administered a portable breath test so two more were given but true results were not obtained. The last test, which was still not completed correctly, had a 0.05 percent result. Officers confiscated the man's handgun as well as a bag of marijuana found in his left pants pocket. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, having an open intoxicant in a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon with a blood alcohol content exceeding 0.02 percent, defective motor vehicle equipment and no proof of insurance.Β 

In an unrelated case, Shores officers stopped a 67-year-old Shores resident May 5 on Lake Shore Road near Edgewood for drunken driving. However, the officer discovered the resident was not feeling well and the officer drove the man home. Another officer drove the resident's car home, parking it in the driveway, according to a report.

In another unrelated case, Shores officers arrested a 29-year-old Woods man April 30 after stopping him because he made a right turn on a red light at Vernier and Lake Shore roads, where it's posted no turns on red. The man had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. He performed field sobriety tests but did so slowly and with labored speech. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license, no proof of insurance and cited for illegally turning on red.Β
