Viewfinder: Under Water In Flood Watch

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for several Michigan counties, including Wayne, Macomb and Oakland, early Wednesday as rain moved in quickly. Heavy rain is expected to drench much of southern Michigan and continue through Thursday. 

Several streets in Grosse Pointe Woods are already flooded and slowing drivers significantly. One reader also reported flooding in Grosse Pointe Farms, although the water has since receded.

According to the flood watch in effect through Thursday night, periods of heavy rain with one to three inches per span are expected. Higher amounts are possible. 

Storms are expected to be heaviest beginning 4 p.m. Wednesday and into the early hours of Thursday morning. Winds could reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour, and hail is possible.

Flooding of streams, rivers and poor drainage areas are likely and the National Weather Service recommends residents to be prepared for such conditions. In addition to the heavy amount of rain, flooding is likely due to the already heavily saturated ground from the especially wet spring southeastern Michigan has experienced.
