3 Killed, 2 Hurt In I-96 Crash In Livingston County: Sheriff

Officials said alcohol, speed and seatbelt use remain under investigation.​

HOWELL, MI — Three people were killed and two others were seriously hurt after a crash on Interstate 96 in Howell on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on eastbound Interstate 96 just east of Highland Road (M-59) in Howell Township, according to officials.

Officials said a 54-year-old Sterling Heights man was driving a 2010 BMW 528I west on the freeway before leaving the roadway and crossing the grass median.

The BMW then entered the eastbound lanes and slammed into a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer, according to officials.

The Sterling Heights man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, according to officials.

The driver of the Mountaineer, a 68-year-old Fowlerville man, was killed in the crash, according to officials.

A 91-year-old Howell woman, who was a passenger in the Mountaineer, was also killed in the crash, according to officials.

Two Fowlerville women, ages 69 and 37, were also passengers in the Mountaineer and were taken to University of Michigan Health hospital where they were listed in critical condition, according to officials.

Officials said alcohol, speed and seatbelt use remain under investigation.

The freeway was shut down for four hours for the investigation and clean up.
