Hartland is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Hartland has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Hartland has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. The township was formed in 1836 and began to grow and thrive several years later when two brothers, Robert D. and Chauncey L. Crouse, arrived in 1842. The Crouse family is credited with the ongoing prosperity of the village, and their descendants continue to be active in the community today.
  • In 2018, the Hartland Township Park Project was completed so residents could enjoy local outdoor living. The project included new structures and playscapes at Heritage Park and Settlers Park, as well as public pavilions for sporting events or community gatherings.
  • Built in 1927, the Cromaine District Library was named after J. Robert Crouse and his uncle, Henry A. Tremaine, by combining the two men’s last names. Crouse and Tremaine donated the library to the Hartland Consolidated Schools district and it remains a community hub to this day.
  • If you're looking for a fun and unique way to experience Hartland, why not try a hot air balloon ride? Several local companies offer balloon rides over the beautiful countryside, giving you a bird's-eye view of the town and surrounding area. Livingston County also hosts an annual Michigan Challenge Balloonfest each summer in nearby Howell.
  • Just outside of Hartland is the beautiful Lake Walden, also known as Brophy Lake. It’s a great local spot for fishing, or you can play a round of golf overlooking the lake at The Majestic.
  • If you're looking for a fun family activity, head to the nearby Spicer Orchards, less than two miles outside the Hartland Township limits. The farm offers pick-your-own fruit, a local market, a playground and a winery and cider mill. It's a great place to spend a day with the kids or enjoy a romantic outing with your partner.
  • For outdoor enthusiasts, the Brighton State Recreation Area is a must-visit destination just a short drive from Hartland. The park offers over 4,000 acres of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, as well as swimming and fishing in the park's many lakes.
  • The Hartland area is home to the historic Waldenwoods Family Recreation Resort, which is owned by Hartland’s own Crouse family and has hosted guests since 1837. The resort offers cozy cabins, luxury villas and a range of amenities, including swimming pools, tennis courts and a spa.
  • Did you know that Hartland has its own community theater group? The Hartland Players' Encore Youth Theater offers young performers a chance to participate in musical theater productions, and the Hartland Players Main Stage offers adult actors the opportunity to showcase their talents in a variety of shows.
  • History buffs will love Hartland’s Florence B. Dearing Museum. Its founder, Florence B. Dearing, aimed to preserve the history of rural home and farm life in the Hartland area by collecting artifacts and memorabilia. Her collection officially became the Florence B. Dearing Museum in 1970 and sits at the intersection of Avon and Crouse streets, in the heart of the Hartland settlement area.
  • Each year, Hartland Township hosts an annual Winterfest in late January or early February. This celebration of the season typically includes a community ice skating rink, DIY craft stations, snow activities, live entertainment and plenty of delicious things to eat and drink.
  • If you're a fan of winter sports, you'll love Hartland's close proximity to skiing and snowboarding destinations like Mt. Brighton and Alpine Valley. These ski resorts offer a variety of runs for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, as well as lessons and rentals.
  • For a unique dining experience, head to the Black Rock Bar and Grill on Highland Road. This restaurant specializes in "sizzling steaks" served on hot volcanic stones, allowing diners to cook their own meals to their liking right at the table. It's a fun and interactive way to enjoy a meal with friends and family.
