- This past Wednesday the city of East Lansing officially lifted the burn ban in the city due to the recent rain improving the fire conditions in the city. The city has been following a burn ban since Jun. 28 and is finally able to resume outdoor fires as long as rules and permits are being followed. It is also being advised that members in the community should remain inside when possible with windows closed due to the return of hazardous air quality from the Canadian wildfires, if you are traveling outdoors please wear an N95 mask for protection. - This past Wednesday, a local support group hosted an event honoring National Aphasia Awareness Month shedding light and information on the disorder and the impact that it has. Katie A. Strong with the Lansing Area Aphasia Support Group spoke on serious topics surrounding the condition as well as the importance of support groups and how people can continue to live normal healthy lives with the condition. It is important to spread knowledge and understanding of the disorder as those who suffer are valuable individuals in the community and should be treated as such. Aphasia is a brain disorder that causes an individual difficulty speaking and understanding others due to damage and disruptions to parts of the brain. (WLNS)
- If lawmakers in Michigan do not agree on a school budget before the end of the week it is possible that schools will not be opening this fall. At this point in conversations, the Democrats need at least six GOP senators to join their side in higher the budget for each student. Warnings have already been given out to parents in the state as this is a real possibility that should be considered, final negotiations are currently underway. If the checks are delayed the governor has the power to end the current legislative session and start a new session that can free up money a bit sooner, but parents and educators will have an answer by the end of this week.
