  1. Michigan welcomed 46 new troopers to the force on Friday as they graduated from the training academy. The class started with 63 recruits back in January and 46 came out on the other side well-trained and ready to serve the community; they will report to their new assignments next week and begin their field training. With the addition of this newest class of troopers, the Michigan State Police force is now just shy of 1,200 troopers statewide, with the next academy beginning in Lansing on Jul. 9. (WJRT)
  2. Earlier this week, Lansing police hosted a realistic mock crash between a car and a motorcycle using crash dummies to simulate real-life scenarios. The training aimed to equip officers with the skills to handle crash scenes effectively and raise awareness about motorcycle safety. Advice was given to both motorcyclists and drivers to promote responsible behavior and vigilance on the road. (WILX)
  3. Michigan's tourism lobby and education groups are at odds over the start date of the school year, with the tourism lobby advocating for schools to open after Labor Day, while the education lobby wants local schools to have the authority to decide the start date. Lansing City Council member Peter Spadafore has introduced a bill that would give school boards the option to open before Labor Day, aiming to prioritize education over the state's tourism industry. A proposed compromise suggests closing schools on Mondays and Fridays throughout August to provide more vacation time for families. (WLNS)
