Macomb County Boy Makes $1,000 Grubhub Order With His Dad's Phone

The boy's parents said the 6-year-old was playing on his dad's phone before his bedtime when he placed the order.

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI — A Macomb County boy is making national headlines after he ordered nearly a $1,000 worth of food from Grubhub while playing on his dad's phone.

Mason Stonehouse, 6, was playing on his dad's phone before his bedtime on Saturday when his father said numerous Grubhub delivery drivers began dropping off orders of shrimp, chicken sandwiches, ice cream, and more at their Chesterfield Township home.

The boy's father told MLive that the doorbell kept ringing and cars were pulling into the driveway as others were backing out.

"I finally asked one of them what they were delivering," the father said. "He said we ordered chicken shwarmas. I took the food and then it hit me. I looked at my phone with repeated messages that my food was getting ready, my food was being delivered. I looked at my bank account and it was getting drained."

Not all the food Mason ordered through the Grubhub app showed up, including a $439 pizza order that was flagged by Stonehouse’s bank as "suspicious," and declined the transaction.

When Mason's father asked him why he ordered all the food, Mason said, "I don’t know, I was hungry," according to the Washington Post.

Mason was also very generous, too, as he left a 25 percent tip on each order, the father said.

Most of the food that showed up was saved for later, while some of it went to neighbors, the parents said.

The parents said they had to figure out the best way to show their son that food equals money. So while maintaining their composure, they decided to take money from Mason's piggy bank, leaving him with a penny instead of $115 he had saved up.

After learning what happened, Grubhub offered the family $1,000 worth of its gift cards.

Mason’s large order made national headlines, as it appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, ABC News, CNN, the Washington Post, as well as others.
