Discard Electronic, Household Hazardous Waste at Upcoming Events

Northville residents can dispose of their electronic and household hazardous waste at special events on Saturday and April 27.

Spring cleaning season means it's time to empty out cluttered closets, garages and basements from old cell phones, televisions, crusting paint cans, insecticides, batteries and other electronic and household hazardous waste.

Wayne County is sponsoring an "E-Waste and Old Tire Recycling Event" Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Northville's Department of Public Works Yard, 650 Doheny Drive.

"It’s for all residents of the City of Livonia, City of Northville and Northville Township," said Wendy Gutowski, Northville's public works clerk.

She said those who attend must bring identification to prove their residency.

Acceptable items include TVs, computers, fax machines, cell phones, power cords and more along with old tires for recycling. Each resident may only recycle four tires, Gutowski said.

Another opportunity for getting rid of waste is "Household Hazardous Waste Day" from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Livonia's Ford Field, 33841 Lyndon St.

The event, sponsored by the City of Livonia, is also open to all Livonia and Northville residents.

"It's for things like unwanted household chemicals, including paints and stains," Gutowski said. "Also fluorescent and compact fluorescent lightbulbs."

It's also a chance for residents to dispose of medical sharps and needles, which she said can be safely transported in an old laundry detergent jug. Electronic waste will also be accepted at this event, she said.

For either events, call 248-449-9930 or visit the City of Northville's website for more information.
