Author Jessica Hatchigan will teach participants about building characters.

Written by Linda Johnson
Are you an aspiring novelist? A new workshop may show you how to create
memorable characters.
Northville author and workshop presenter Jessica Hatchigan says, "Writers can learn how to create characters that capture, entertain and intrigue readers."
“Analyze any bestselling novel,” she adds, “and you’ll see that the author uses five specific techniques. Aspiring writers can learn and adopt the same techniques to vastly improve their work.”
In her workshop, Hatchigan covers the following: the "do's and don'ts" of building a character; how characterization ties in to plot; a hero’s "must have" characteristics; the importance of your villain, and how to create character arcs. Her presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.
Hatchigan’s workshop is called "How Bestselling Authors Create Pageturners via Awesome Characters." It is free to the public and will be held at (212 West Cady Street), from 1-2 p.m., on Saturday, March 31 in Meeting Room A. Attendance is limited to the first 25 signups.
Hatchigan is the author of a business book published by McGrawHill and of two children's books published by HarperCollins. Hatchigan taught English and writing at Wayne State University and has been a contributor to The Writer’s Handbook, Writer’s Digest, and The Writer magazines.
She is the narrator of the video tutorial, "Techniques Bestselling Authors Use to Create Pageturners via Plot & Scene Building Techniques," an innovative illustrated writing tutorial which is currently available for viewing from Amazon.com.
