Northville Public Safety Director: Threatening Call to Elementary School Was Likely Not Credible

An anonymous threatening call to shook up Northville Public Schools today.

"We don't believe it was a credible threat," said John Werth, Northville Township Director of Public Safety. Still, he added, when children are involved "we never take it lightly."

A male caller, who dialed the school around 9:30 a.m., was likely trying to divert police attention to schools while possibly causing trouble elsewhere in town, he said. Similar calls were also made in other communities including Farmington, Livonia and Redford. The Northville Township police department is working with others to investigate but has no leads yet on who the caller may be.

Werth said the details of the call will not be released pending investigation of the incident.

In Farmington, two schools were on lockdown today Martin, 17, was shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Florida, while walking home after purchasing a drink and candy.

Winchester was on lockdown today and other schools in the district are on a heightened security alert, he said. "We're keeping these areas monitored."

Werth said that while parents are not encouraged to take any special measures because of the threat, they are urged to remain cautious as usual.

"Always keep an eye out for suspicious activity," he said. "Report strange activity or people."
